Helen's House® Long-Term Care Households
Assisted Living Facility In Appleton, WI

Helen’s House® was named after Helen.  Helen, a lifelong resident of Appleton, Wisconsin, lived a fiercely independent life, living along in her home along the Fox River for 24 years following the passing of her husband Roy.  Through her late 80’s Helen drove, went out to eat with friends, and mulched her beloved hostas.  In May 2012 Helen suffered a mild heart attack, but because she was living alone her condition went unnoticed for several days.  After a minor hospital procedure, Helen returned home with an in-home care provider scheduled for a few hours per day.

While home alone Helen experienced two separate falls both of which necessitated emergency room visits.  After the second fall Helen agreed to go to a nursing home for rehabilitative care and then transition to a long-term assisted living facility.  On October 6, 2012, three months after moving into the long-term elderly care facility, Helen passed away.  She was 90 years old.

Helen’s youngest son Christopher was surprised at how quickly his mother lost her sense of independence in the large institutional setting.  Additionally, despite the facility’s excellent reputation for caring senior services, staffing constraints often delayed response to Helen’s needs.

Reflecting on the last months of his mother’s life, Christopher believe there could be a better, more dignified and meaningful approach to age in place care for seniors, like Helen, who would prefer residential care over a large institutional setting.  He discovered the congregate housing model, an innovative approach to domiciliary care, that felt like a real home, and established HELEN’S HOUSE®, named after his beloved mother.  The first HELEN’S HOUSE® Long-Term Care Household opened in July 2013.

Helen's House® Is Locally Owned and Operated

Every HELEN’S HOUSE® Long-Term Care Household is a custom-built energy efficient 4-bedroom home located in an actual neighborhood. The homes are designed to blend into the fabric of the community – no signs out front and no secluded campus – and create an authentic living environment for its four residents with cookies in the oven, dinners around a kitchen table and meaningful relationships among the four seniors who live there.

Each home has four large bedrooms, each having has its own private ADA-compliant bathroom and vanity area. All doorways and hallways are wide, enabling easy passage of residents in wheelchairs. All entrances to the home are at grade level, eliminating steps and allowing for easy entrance and exiting. The home has been designed with two separate large interior living areas to offer residents a choice. An extra large front porch and a patio area off the expansive sunroom in the back of the home create two outdoor living spaces.

  • Helen’s House is amazing! My mother lived there for 4 years and she loved it! As a resident you can make your room your own not some sterile nursing home. She liked the 4:1 ratio for care. Helen’s House is like family!  By: L.J. daughter of resident
  • Excellent care with only 4 residents good home cooked meals.  By: E.N.
  • My beautiful Mom has been at the Helens House for over a year now and this is the perfect fit for her. She still feels that she is in a home, not an assisted living facility but a warm, cozy home. My Mom’s anxiety level has decreased so much and she feels safe at the Helens House. I am also very pleased at the care she is receiving. Her needs are attended to quickly. The staff is very knowledgeable, kind and loving. I highly recommend the Helens House to everyone. I am blessed and lucky that my Mom is a resident in such a top notch facility! A+. Keep up the good work! By: J.B. daughter of resident
  • The care is more one on one with only 4 people to the home. The elderly feel more comfortable in a home setting. The meals are all made and served in the dining room.  By: D.W.
  • What a blessing it is to have Helen’s House. Finally we have Mom in a caring, more personal, home setting under the eyes of wonderful staff. We give it 5 stars and more!  By: D.W. son of resident
  • The individual care given to my mother and others in this Home, not a facility, is a blessing. What more could a family ask for, then come into a home, share meals, trips, fun times and all so with a personal touch. I just wish everyone could experience this first hand.  Thank you Christopher and the Caregivers.  By: P.W. son of resident
  • My mother has been with Helen’s House for the past year. Prior to HELEN’S HOUSE she was in a nursing home for about a 1 1/2 years. I find that HELEN’S HOUSE is a more “homey” environment. I know that she is being taken well care of. The staff is wonderful with her. They take the time to really know and care about their residents. I enjoy getting to know the employees as well as the other residents. I am thankful everyday that my mom has a place like this to call home.  By: D.D. daughter of resident
  • I’ve lived at HELEN’S HOUSE for 1 1/2 years. I moved from a larger facility where I lived for 6 years. HELEN’S HOUSE is so much better for me. Because there are only 4 residents the response time is so much faster. The Caregivers can also spend much more time with you. The larger facilities are fine if you can walk, but not good at all if you are wheelchair bound. Thank goodness for HELEN’S HOUSE!  By: M. F. resident
  • Thank you so much for the great care that Mom is receiving. Just yesterday we had Mom at her great granddaughter and great grandson’s birthday party and she was telling everyone what a wonderful place she lives at and how caring and helpful everyone is. Mom was recommending HELEN’S HOUSE to everyone there:)  By: G.G. daughter of resident
  • My 94-year-old aunt has made tremendous progress during the past two years as a resident at Helen’s House. The close interaction between my aunt and her Caregivers at Helen’s House has positively impacted my aunt both socially and physically. Recuperating from hip surgery was not an easy piece for my aunt, but her living situation at Helen’s House has made her life cherished and meaningful. Thanks for making this living situation possible.  By: K.T. niece of resident
  • Our Mother was at Helen’s House for a year and a half. During her stay, Mom enjoyed the home-like atmosphere and the wonderful care she was given by all the staff.
  • We highly recommend Helen’s House for the care of your loved ones.  By: P.P. and G.G. daughters of resident
  • The mission and vision of Helen’s House are manifest in the attention and devotion to true caring for your residents. Helen’s House is unique in elder care.  By: S.W. son of resident

The People At HELEN'S HOUSE®

The 1:4 care ratio at HELEN’S HOUSE® Long-Term Care Households enables the Caregivers to get to know their residents and give them the care and attention they deserve. We are able to attract Caregivers demonstrating high levels of care and compassion while also being highly skilled and capable. Our staff also includes a full-time Registered Nurse with over 20 years of nursing experience.

The Support At HELEN'S HOUSE®
In addition to the obvious support provided by the caregiving staff and the Director of Care, the unique living environment at HELEN’S HOUSE® Long-Term Care Households enables the residents and their families to form strong friendships amongst themselves in a manner that can only occur in an actual home living environment. Our four residents thrive in homes and neighborhoods where they are not defined by their medical condition, but rather by who they are as individuals. We encourage our residents’ autonomy, respect their need for physical and emotional privacy, and take their preferences, choices and status as an adult into consideration when providing care, supervision and activities.

How Our Care
Makes The Difference

A unique alternative to a large nursing home or assisted living facility, HELEN’S HOUSE® Long-Term Care Households provides 24-hour live-in care that gives residents dignity, hope, and meaning.  To learn how, please call us at 920-851-2345.

The Care At HELEN'S HOUSE®
The HELEN’S HOUSE® Long-Term Care Households Director of Care custom-designs a Care Plan for each resident with input provided by the resident and his/her physicians and family. The Director of Care oversees the care delivery and monitors residents for changes in condition and communicates this to the family and doctor. Our Caregivers work closely with the Director of Care to ensure that we consistently exceed the expectations of our residents and their families. And don’t forget the 1:4 care ratio at HELEN’S HOUSE® – this enables our staff to truly get to know their residents and give them the care and attention they deserve. Our 1:4 care ratio gives us the ability to conform our schedules to the needs of the residents instead of the other way around, which is often the case. Lastly, our residents will not have to move to a nursing home as their level of assistance increases; rather, the necessary supportive services can be coordinated and brought in to enable residents to remain at HELEN’S HOUSE® and to age in place.
