HELEN'S HOUSE® Long-Term Care Households were established in 2013 by Helen's son, Christopher. Helen, a lifelong resident of Appleton, Wisconsin, lived a fiercely independent life, living alone in her home along the Fox River in Appleton for 24 years following the passing of her husband Roy. Through her late 80's, Helen drove her car, went out to eat with her lifelong friends and even hauled bags of mulch in her yard to put around her beloved hostas.
In May, 2012, Helen suffered a mild heart attack. Because she was living alone, her condition went unnoticed for several days. After a minor procedure in a local hospital, Helen returned home with in-home care arranged a few hours each day to help her with her daily activities. On two separate occasions while alone in her home, Helen fell, necessitating trips to the local emergency room. It wasn't until after the second fall, that Helen agreed to go to a local nursing home for rehabilitative care with a planned transition into long term care. Just three months after moving into the nursing home, Helen passed away on October 6, 2012 at the age of 90.
Helen's youngest son, Christopher, was living in Appleton. He had never experienced a nursing home before. He was surprised at how quickly his previously independent mother lost her sense of independence due to the large institutional setting. In addition, while this facility was arguably one of the best in the Fox Valley and the staff did everything they possibly could given their staffing levels, there were times when Helen pressed her call button and significant time elapsed before someone could assist her.
After Helen passed away, Christopher had a chance to step back and reflect on the last months of his mother's life. Christopher knew there could be a better way - with more dignity and meaning - to treat the beloved elders in our community, who, like Helen, would prefer not to be in a large institutional setting.
Through a family member, Christopher learned of an innovative alternative to assisted living or nursing home care that addressed many of the challenges his mother faced in a more traditional environment. Christopher quickly embraced this innovative care model, naming it after his beloved mother, and set out to design and build his first HELEN'S HOUSE® Long-Term Care Household which opened in July, 2013. Through his personal experience as well as that of his mother, Christopher developed an innovative option for other families to consider when evaluating placement options for their loved one.
HELEN'S HOUSE® Long-Term Care Households are an innovative residential alternative to large nursing home and assisted living facilities that are designed to provide dignity, hope, and meaning to the four seniors that live here. I've lived at HELEN'S HOUSE for 1 1/2 years. I moved from a larger facility where I lived for 6 years. HELEN'S HOUSE is so much better for me. Because there are only 4 residents the response time is so much faster. The caregivers can also spend much more time with you. The larger facilities are fine if you can walk, but not good at all if you are wheelchair bound. Thank goodness for HELEN'S HOUSE!

Thank you so much for the great care that Mom is receiving. Just yesterday we had Mom at her great granddaughter and great grandson's birthday party and she was telling everyone what a wonderful place she lives at and how caring and helpful everyone is. Mom was recommending HELEN'S HOUSE to everyone there:)

My 94-year-old aunt has made tremendous progress during the past two years as a resident at Helen’s House. The close interaction between my aunt and her caregivers at Helen’s House has positively impacted my aunt both socially and physically. Recuperating from hip surgery was not an easy piece for my aunt, but her living situation at Helen’s House has made her life cherished and meaningful. Thanks for making this living situation possible.

Our Mother was at Helen’s House for a year and a half. During her stay, Mom enjoyed the home-like atmosphere and the wonderful care she was given by all the staff.
We highly recommend Helen’s House for the care of your loved ones.

What a blessing it is to have Helen’s House. Finally we have Mom in a caring, more personal, home setting under the eyes of wonderful staff. We give it 5 stars and more!

The individual care given to my mother and others in this Home, not a facility, is a blessing. What more could a family ask for, then come into a home, share meals, trips, fun times and all so with a personal touch. I just wish everyone could experience this first hand.
Thank you Christopher and the caregivers.

My mother has been with Helen’s House for the past year. Prior to HELEN'S HOUSE she was in a nursing home for about a 1 1/2 years. I find that HELEN'S HOUSE is a more “homey” environment. I know that she is being taken well care of. The staff is wonderful with her. They take the time to really know and care about their residents. I enjoy getting to know the employees as well as the other residents. I am thankful everyday that my mom has a place like this to call home.
